Serving Notice: Finish Well and Prepare for What’s Next
A practical handover and joining checklist that respects both your current and future teams.
Confirm the dates
Discuss your contractual notice, leave balance, handover responsibilities and proposed last working day with the appropriate person at your employer. Keep your future employer informed of confirmed dates, and distinguish requests from approvals.
Make the handover usable
Document current work, owners, deadlines and known risks in the systems your team uses. Share access through approved company processes. Do not forward private client files or internal credentials to a personal account.
Prepare without working two jobs
Ask your future manager about onboarding, equipment and introductory reading. Any pre-joining contact should respect your current obligations. Do not perform confidential work for a future employer while creating a conflict with your current role.
Keep communication clear
- Confirm your last working day and joining date in writing.
- Keep the recruiter informed about material changes.
- Discuss references and permission before sharing contact details.
- Retain your own permitted employment documents.
- Check where and when to arrive, or how remote onboarding works.
A considered transition protects professional relationships and helps the next team prepare.
