Managing a Notice Period: A Clearer Path from Offer to Joining
Practical steps for staying aligned through a long notice period, without promising that every dropout can be prevented.
Start with the actual constraint
Ask the candidate to confirm their contractual notice period and whether they have resigned. Separate a hoped-for early release from a date the current employer has agreed. Do not present an unconfirmed buyout as guaranteed availability.
Agree a contact rhythm
Before an offer is accepted, agree who will stay in touch and how often. A short, useful conversation about the role is more valuable than repeated requests to confirm the joining date. Ask permission before introducing future colleagues, and respect the candidate’s existing employment obligations.
Make changes discussable
Counter-offers, family needs and changes to the role can affect a decision. Invite candidates to raise these early. Discuss what originally motivated the move and whether the new role still addresses it. The purpose is clarity, not pressure.
A practical joining checklist
- Confirm the reporting line, role scope and agreed compensation in writing.
- Distinguish contractual notice, requested release and confirmed joining date.
- Name a contact on each side and agree check-ins.
- Discuss location, equipment and the first week’s expectations.
- Record open questions and the next agreed action.
These steps support communication. They cannot guarantee a joining outcome or remove every counter-offer risk.
