Compensation Conversations: Look Beyond Headline CTC

By Quantum Leaps · Published and reviewed 25 October 2026 · 2 min read

A practical checklist for comparing fixed pay, variable pay and equity. This is guidance, not a salary survey or market benchmark.

Separate the components

A headline CTC can combine fixed salary, variable pay, employer contributions, benefits and equity. Ask for the structure, not just the total. Compare recurring cash with recurring cash, and keep uncertain or one-off components visible.

Understand variable pay

Ask what determines payment, whether targets are individual or company-wide, when payment is made and whether joining mid-year affects eligibility. Distinguish a target amount from a guaranteed amount.

Treat equity as a separate discussion

Ask about the instrument, vesting schedule, exercise price, expiry and what happens when employment ends. Do not treat a private-company valuation as cash available today. Candidates should seek appropriate professional advice for tax or legal questions.

Align the role and the budget

Compensation varies with role scope, location, company stage and individual experience. Quantum Leaps is not presenting independently measured salary bands in this guide.
